森林湖的家 Sen Lin Hu Families

At Sen Lin Hu, everyone is part of a family. We eat with our families for lunch and dinner, and we occasionally do evening activities with them. Everyone enjoys the chance to be a mother, father, sister, or brother away from home. Here are the Sen Lin Hu families for the next two weeks!

新的学期开始了 A New Session Begins!

Yesterday we had 46 more villagers arrive for a two-week stay at Sen Lin Hu! They joined the four-week credit students in the evening to present their cabin 口号 kouhao , or cheers. This video includes most of the 口号. Unfortunately, we were not able to record 少林寺 Shaolinsi’s cheer due to technical difficulties, but hopefully this clip will offer you a taste of the evening campfire at Sen Lin Hu.

We celebrated the Dragon Boat Festival on Sunday, and the central event was the Dragon Boat race. Each 家 (family) had a team race a canoe in the competition. Here are some pictures from the event! 饭菜介绍 Meal Presentations

At Sen Lin Hu, groups of villagers take turns performing a meal presentation, or 饭菜介绍, before each meal to introduce the foods that will be eaten. This video is one of the Tuesday evening dinner presentation.

In this 饭菜介绍, the theme is Mario Party. First, the main characters (Luiji, Toad, Princess Peach, Donkey Kong, a duck/Yoshi, and Panda) are driving around and crash into each other. Bowser, a large evil tortoise, comes over and demands to eat one of them. Both creatures give a reason for why the other creature should be eaten, and the disgusted Bowser decides not to eat either of them. In the second part, the foods are introduced as the Mario characters bump the block. The characters take the foods and walk between the tables, calling and responding the food name to review common foods and condiments and introduce new ones.

The meal presentations are an integral aspect of Sen Lin Hu. First, they allow villagers to become familiar with names of foods, drinks, and utensils in Chinese. Everyone uses these words to retrieve food from the kitchen, ask for food to be passed across the table, inquire about flavors of foods, and so on. The presentations also offer villagers a chance to be creative and perform using the structures and vocabulary they are learning in front of the Sen Lin Hu community. Finally, the performances are quite fun to watch!

中国传统游戏 Traditional Chinese Games Night

On Friday, villagers enjoyed an evening of party activities, including a several games from China. For example, in one game, villagers tried to hit a gong while blindfolded by following directions of “left” and “right” from their teammates. See the below video to get a glance into the ping pong station, and visit the Picasa album for a few pictures of the event.
